If you've never seen a naturopath before, you're not alone. Many people have heard the word but aren't entirely sure what we actually do. Are we herbalists? Nutritionists? Supplement experts?

The answer is... a little bit of all of the above.

At its heart, naturopathy is a holistic system of healthcare that asks a simple question:

"Why is this happening?"

Rather than focusing solely on reducing symptoms, we look for the underlying factors that may have contributed to them in the first place. That's because symptoms aren't usually the problem.

They're your body's way of asking for attention.

Fatigue isn't simply a lack of energy. Anxiety isn't always "just stress." Digestive discomfort isn't always about the food you ate yesterday.

Your body is constantly communicating with you, and my role is to help translate what it's trying to say.

Naturopathy harnesses the healing power of plants through teas, tinctures, tonics, spagyrics, essential oils, powders, supplements, ferments and ingredients in the meals we eat.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a system of medicine that focuses on natural remedies and the body's ability to heal itself. It combines traditional healing practices with modern scientific knowledge. Naturopaths believe that health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

Core Principles of Naturopathy

  1. The Healing Power of Nature: Naturopathy emphasizes the body's inherent ability to heal itself. Practitioners support this process through natural therapies.

  2. Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathy considers the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health. It recognizes that mental wellness is interconnected with physical health.

  3. Identify and Treat the Causes: Instead of merely addressing symptoms, naturopathy seeks to identify the underlying causes of health issues.

  4. Prevention: Naturopathy promotes preventive care through lifestyle changes, nutrition, and education to maintain health and prevent illness.

  5. Doctor as Teacher: Naturopaths educate patients about their health and empower them to take an active role in their healing journey.

Naturopathy: A healing tradition thousands of years in the making

People have been using plants as medicine for as long as humans have existed. Every culture has developed its own relationship with the natural world, learning through observation which herbs eased pain, soothed inflammation, settled digestion, or supported recovery after illness.

Western Herbal Medicine draws much of its lineage from the medical traditions of Ancient Greece and Rome, where physicians like Hippocrates recognised the healing potential of plants alongside the importance of food, movement, rest, and environment. Over centuries, this knowledge was refined by herbalists, physicians, midwives, monks, apothecaries, and researchers before evolving into the evidence-informed practice we know today.

Modern naturopathy brings together this rich history with contemporary scientific research. We now understand many of the active compounds within medicinal plants, how they interact with human physiology, and where herbal medicine may have a role alongside nutrition, lifestyle medicine, conventional healthcare, and modern diagnostics.

For me, it's never been about choosing between "natural" and "conventional." It's about using the right tools, at the right time, for the right person.

Looking beyond the diagnosis

Receiving a diagnosis can be incredibly validating. It gives a name to what you're experiencing and often opens the door to treatment. But a diagnosis doesn't always explain why your body ended up there in the first place.

Two people can both experience anxiety while arriving there through completely different pathways. One may be chronically sleep deprived. Another may have experienced prolonged stress and burnout. Someone else may have nutritional deficiencies, unstable blood sugar, persistent inflammation, digestive dysfunction, hormonal changes, or a combination of several factors.

The label might be the same, but the road that led there is often unique.

That's why every consultation begins with curiosity. Together we'll explore your health history, your lifestyle, your nutrition, your stress, your sleep, your environment, and the small pieces that often get overlooked.

Because understanding the whole picture gives us far more opportunities to support your health than simply chasing symptoms.

Building the Foundations of Health

One of my favourite ways to think about health is as a hierarchy.

Imagine trying to build a house.

You wouldn't start by hanging the curtains before pouring the foundation.

The same principle applies to your body.

While supplements and herbs can be incredibly valuable, they work best when they're supporting strong foundations.

That's why we begin with the essentials:

  • Nourishing food that actually fits your lifestyle.

  • Sleep that allows your body to recover.

  • Movement that leaves you feeling stronger rather than depleted.

  • Stress management that feels realistic—not another item on your to-do list.

  • Meaningful relationships.

  • Time outdoors.

  • Joy, purpose, and play.

From there, we can layer in targeted nutrition, herbal medicine, and evidence-informed supplementation where they're likely to have the greatest impact.

Sometimes the answer is adding something... Sometimes it's removing something...

Often, it's helping your body get back to doing what it already knows how to do.

Diet and lifestyle will always matter

Not a day goes by where in practice, someone is looking for a magic silver bullet to all their health woes. I get it, it's easy to hope for one supplement that fixes everything, and I wish it were that simple.

Our bodies are shaped by the small choices we make every day; what we eat, how we sleep, how we move, the relationships we nurture, how we respond to stress, and whether we create enough space for recovery.

None of us do these things perfectly (myself included!!!), but perfection has never been the goal.

Instead, I focus on finding the changes that will give you the biggest return for the smallest amount of effort. Sustainable changes almost always outperform perfect ones.

What about supplements?

The supplement industry can feel overwhelming to say the very least.

Walk into any health food store and you'll find shelves overflowing with products promising better sleep, sharper focus, beautiful skin, perfect poops, happier moods, stronger immunity and endless energy.

While some are backed by excellent evidence and some have promising early research, unfortunately, others simply don't live up to the hype.

One of my roles as a practitioner is helping you navigate that noise.

As our understanding of nutrition, herbal medicine, and human physiology continues to grow, we're seeing an increasing number of nutrients and botanical medicines supported by high-quality scientific research. Used appropriately, they can be valuable tools.

Not magic bullets.

The goal isn't to take supplements forever. The goal is to use them strategically while addressing the factors that contributed to your symptoms in the first place.

Soul-aligned growth

You'll probably notice something a little different if we work together.

I'm not interested in making your world smaller.

I don't want to hand you a list of fifty foods you're never allowed to eat again, or convince you that every product in your house is toxic, or make you feel guilty because life got busy and you forgot your supplements for a week; Life is meant to be lived!

I became a naturopath because I wanted to be able to squeeze every last drop of juice out of life.

I wanted to dance at festivals until sunrise, to spend weekends hiking through rugged bushland, to have the energy and focus to paint for hours on end, and to get closer to the most vibrant, healthy, radiant version of myself that I could be. But I was diagnosed with a rare form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with "atypical" and "untreatable" symptoms - I was the classic patient the conventional medical system simply couldn't help.

Dancing my little heart out with a dear friend, Louise, at Esoteric Festival a few years back.

I just knew there had to be a better way to do things.

And along the way, I learned that health isn't about saying "no" to life.

It's about building a body and mind that allow you to say "yes" more often.

So my role isn't to judge you, it's to stand beside you as your biggest cheerleader; helping you understand your body, celebrating every win along the way, and giving you the tools to create lasting change that actually fits your life.

Because healing is about so much more than making symptoms disappear.

It's about waking up with energy.

Feeling resilient when life gets messy.

Trusting your body again.

Laughing more.

Connecting more deeply with the people around you.

Finding confidence in yourself.

And, perhaps most importantly, falling back in love with your life.

That's the kind of health I want for you.
